Slowly, a national conspiracy that was to be the subject of Kerr's next book, is unraveled. Bruce's temp Nick quickly realizes that Kerr did not fall victim to the hurricane but was killed. Exploring the island the protagonist finds a writer, Nelson Kerr, dead in his house. Other parts of the island are more severely hit.
